The 80/20 Rule for Retail Analytics

While blueprinting a solution, the digad team focuses on your business objectives and maintains tactical requirements separately. What does that really mean? We believe that the right collaboration of People, Systems and Process creates a competitive advantage; and allows the system to achieve long-term, strategic goals. When activities, personalities and the company’s corporate culture are aligned, properly identified KPIs will validate your strategy and provide a basis to further optimize resources.

We use the 80/20 rule while determining strategic KPIs. Management’s business objectives are supported by routine; daily reporting to validate that everything is running smoothly. But when we examine junior versus senior data relationships, we find opportunities to make changes amongst products, stores and resources. An example of this is co-variance relationships that support shopping basket analytics. In today’s omni-channel marketplace, channel differences and sales by business type are readily compared in merely one or two clicks of insightful drill-downs.

So when you consider investing in a new system, ask your management team “What 20% is our 80%?” A new solution should have a strategy that is time and revenue driven. With digad’s System Blueprint Process, your investment isn’t just satisfying requirements; it empowers your employees to achieve goals, empowers your management to make influential decisions and allows your company to be more profitable.

GS1 Partnership Announcement

digad’s clients use SAP Business One ERP as a single platform to maintain multiple barcodes per item, while also tracking global distribution channels.

digad is a certified solution provider of GS1 US, providing ERP apparel solutions that track and manage GS1 codes from source to store.

digad’s clients use SAP Business One ERP as a single platform to maintain multiple barcodes per item, while also tracking global distribution channels. digad implements SAP Business One using primary GS1 identifiers (GTIN, GLN, SSCC) in all aspects of the supply chain from manufacturer, logistics operational partners and meeting retail delivery standards.

Who needs GS1 standards? Retailers in the US are increasingly demanding product traceability and the extension of GS1 identification keys into their warehouses and stores, defined explicitly in published floor ready standards. Similar to the industry’s demands of EDI, and yet one of the same, GS1 standards are demanded by retailers while the transparency and data efficiency have delivered benefits to wholesalers as well.

Why now? Having recently eliminated patent trolls, increasing regulation amongst factories and proven benefits to retailers; implementing GS1 standards today is paramount for all trading partners throughout the supply chain. Front of store efficiencies and reduced shrinkage, to name a few of the obvious benefits, have driven the business case amongst leading retailers and early adopters of GS1’s EPC enabled RFID tags.

digad partners with GSG Technology to provide a test drive demonstration of SAP Business One in Amazon’s SAP Certified cloud. SAP has long since stated that their customers decide if they prefer on premise or cloud-based solution – it’s a matter of personal taste. And SAP Business One is no exception to the rule! digad’s fashion apparel solution is made readily available in a multi-tenant or private cloud environment, and for a low, upfront implementation costs.

How is SAP made affordable for startups and emerging brands?
Despite increased demands by retailers and order minimums of competitive suppliers; margins are continually scrutinized and business processes are tested. A collection of online SaaS tools may get those boutique orders filled however; such disparate tools desire a unified data flow, cannot entertain EDI orders and lack transparency otherwise provided by order-to-cash ERP platforms. SAP Business one is an affordable solution for startup and emerging companies who need a robust system to handle day-to-day operations and experience the growth of a successful brand.

In a multi-tenant cloud, a five-seat SAP Business One instance can provide a robust operational structure with supply chain and client visibility for as low as $1,000 a month (plus implementation costs). This changes the game significantly while competing in a global marketplace. The top five reasons small and middle-sized companies make investment decision are the same reasons (except for the first!) that larger companies spend millions on their systems.

  1. Price – Low up front costs of an ERP system that can accommodate growth of $100M+ revenues. By avoiding extensive BI tools and major operational changes, the restructure time and expense of data migrations is eliminated.
  2. Inventory Management – With the ability to sell to several boutiques from a single factory order, brands can handle the volume while also identify excess inventory for timely promotions and eCommerce synchronization.
  3. Order Management and Customer Service – Visibility throughout the supply chain facilitates on-time deliveries and manages retailer’s expectations when delays cannot be avoided. A centralized CRM system like SAP B1 maintains a single source of truth for all activities related to a single client or trading partner.
  4. System Quality – A brand name like SAP is continually at work for their clients. Over 50M Euros are spent annually on product development. That means that a team of people are taking your feedback seriously and investing it directly into your business operations. You won’t find this type of global support in a regional brand or house built system.
  5. Operational Risk –When infrastructure doesn’t have long-term goals and cannot entertain business demands, the disruption to migrate to a new platform poses significant risk to the company’s financials, culture, data structure and presiding operational flow. Understandably, executives delay making strategic decisions to “fix something that isn’t broken” which is required to maintain a competitive advantage and entertain business growth.

Don’t get caught in the trap!
Once a typical organization has succeeded beyond that of a startup, the cost of changing system is absolutely daunting. Companies today who’re overly invested in costly house systems and occupy disparate workflows have positioned themselves to entetain a higher risk/reward ratio than a younger startup. In addition to ordinary costs of a new system (i.e. hardware, software, professional services and internal resources), forfeiting the existing investment poses the risk of a failed ERP project, threatens a favorable corporate culture and requires some form of a “fresh start” all together. We’re not saying this isn’t worth it, but if one could invest earlier in an enterprise platform like SAP B1, then the pain to change later is largely eliminated. Hosted SAP B1 clients can enhance their system with incremental investment to the platform, supported by organic business growth without the disruption of changing systems.

How smart is your POS system? Exploring the value of a fully integrated retail environment

Retailers gain visibility and control through their POS system by obtaining direct access to primary data and initiating workflows that continue throughout the supply chain.

As with most quickly deployed SaaS technologies, unplugged POS systems provide an immediate value at an attractive price point.

Retailers gain visibility and control through their POS system by obtaining direct access to primary data and initiating workflows that continue throughout the supply chain.

As with most quickly deployed SaaS technologies, unplugged POS systems provide an immediate value at an attractive price point. Startup boutiques and newer brands are finding affordable, unplugged POS systems meeting their needs within their stores. The problem develops as the company grows and additional applications are purchased to support B2B sales and Magento eCommerce. As the company grows, the pitfalls of multiple disparate systems are exploited more an more. Although it was originally logical to handle one challenge at a time, the resulting BI and Excel analysis and (lack of) reporting is not so desirable.

In the above diagram each specialized system (POS, Website, 3PL services or WMS) is simultaneously serving a functional LOB. Unfortunately opportunities to pursue Omni-channel demands of the discerning shopper is likely missed and operational deficiencies become inevitable. Inventory visibility, same-day drop ships for specialized orders, JIT replenishment processes, timely promotions and loyalty programs for client retention require a single, unified system that serves the entire supply chain as a whole.

Business One is designed as an ERP with strong inventory and warehouse capabilities throughout the core application. This means that the solution serves as a central repository of transactional data and reporting, without requiring additional investment of costly BI tools and excel-manpower.

Emerging brands are faced with extensive start up costs and purchasing an ERP system at day one is not realistic. digad’s phased design strategy allows for the installation of iVend’s POS “unplugged” which a corresponding blue print to integrate SAP Business One and Magento at a later time.

Do your sourcing requirements affect your product line? Examining the complex “caravan” Journey.

Following a series of tragic events in Bangladesh, the five pillars of criteria for CPOs have been challenged. Price, quality, capacity, speed and risk have all contributed to the overall rise of RMG costs globally.

Sourcing as a whole (independent of any one country), is expected to rise by as much as 4% or greater by 2020 according to a McKinsey & Co’s survey of 29 CMOs in 2013. The two drivers that motivate alternative options are attractive prices and supplier capacity; further offset by gaps in infrastructure and compliance requirements.

The two drivers that motivate alternative options are attractive prices and supplier capacity; further offset by gaps in infrastructure and compliance requirements. We examine the role that technology provides for large players (expecting a 3.5% increase) primarily seeking capacity, versus the smaller value players (expecting only a 2% increase), who’s more sensitive to the bottom-line prices.

Industry sophistication remains the reason for a continued shift from China to other countries in Asia and Africa. SAP Business One manages complex BOMs and vendor contracts, facilitates purchasing process and material resource planning from concept-to-delivery.

Despite rising costs of compliance and corporate responsibility initiatives in these countries, lower wages and overall supplier capabilities are critical for buyers of all types. Bangladesh continues to pose significant advantages both in terms of cost and capacity, while remaining a top three contender for expecting sourcing in the coming years.

According to the five pillars of costs, certain gains are expected to cancel out the savings of others.

  1. Price – Attractive labor costs are often challenged by ethics
  2. Quality – An overall shift in buyer’s activities will provide lesser-established factories more opportunities. Concerns about quality will be a factor.
  3. Capacity – With the ability to fill large orders, those buyers will inherently invest in compliance and corporate responsibility initiatives.
  4. Speed – What is the value of on-time deliveries?
  5. Risk – The cost of change always presents a continued risk-reward relationship.
